What Are Anki Cards? 

Anki has become one of the most trusted study tools for learners who need to retain large amounts of information without wasting time on repetitive review. 

  

Anki cards are digital flashcards designed to help people study more efficiently and remember information for the long term. Unlike a normal stack of paper flashcards, Anki does not make you review every card the same way every time. Instead, it uses a method called spaced repetition, which helps you spend less time on material you already know and more time on the material that still needs work. 

  

For example, if you had a stack of 50 flashcards, the traditional way would usually mean flipping through all 50 cards again and again. Anki works differently. If you already know a card well, it will show that card less often. If a card is more difficult, it will continue bringing it back until you know it better. This makes study time more efficient and helps cut down on wasted review. 

  

That is one reason Anki has become so popular in medical school and dental school. Students in those programs are often required to memorize very large amounts of information, and Anki gives them a way to keep up with that workload in a more organized and manageable way. Instead of constantly rereading notes or reviewing the same flashcards over and over, they can focus their time where it is needed most.

How to Download and Set Up Anki 

Once you are ready to get started, the setup process is fairly simple. Follow the steps below to download Anki and open it for the first time on Windows. 

  

Anki is free to download on desktop devices, including Windows, Mac, and Linux. The iPhone and iPad version, AnkiMobile, is available through the App Store for a one-time purchase, while Android users can use AnkiDroid. 

  

Step 1: Go to the Anki website < Link Here 

Start by visiting the Anki website. From the homepage, click the Download Anki button. 

 

Step 2: Choose the correct version for your device 

  

You will be taken to the downloads page. Under the Desktop section, select the version that matches your computer. In this example, the Windows 10+ version was selected. 

  

If you are using a phone or tablet instead, you can also choose the iOS or Android version from the Mobile section. 

 

Step 3: Open the downloaded file 

  

Once the file finishes downloading, open it from your browser or downloads folder. This will begin the installation process. 

 

Step 4: Choose the installation folder 

 

A setup window will appear asking where you want Anki installed. Most users can leave this at the default location. Click Install to continue. 

  

Step 5: Let the launcher install Anki 

  

After clicking install, the Anki launcher window may appear. On Windows, this can look more technical than a normal installer, but that is okay. In most cases, you can simply press Enter to continue with the latest version. 

  

The launcher will then download and install Anki for you automatically. 

 

Step 6: Select your language 

 

When Anki opens for the first time, you may be asked to choose your language. Select your preferred option, such as English (United States), and click OK. 

  

Step 7: Confirm your language selection 

  

A confirmation box may appear asking if you want to use that language for the interface. Click Yes. 

 

Step 8: Anki is ready to use 

Once setup is complete, Anki will open to the main screen. At this point, the program is installed and ready to use. 

From here, you can create your own deck, import a premade deck, or begin adjusting your settings.

How to Import a CockpitClassroom Anki Deck

Once Anki is installed, the next step is importing your CockpitClassroom deck so you can begin studying.

Step 1: Download the deck from CockpitClassroom

Go to the blog post or study page where the deck is linked. Click the Anki deck icon to begin the download.

 

Step 2: Save the file

A save window may appear asking where you want the file stored. Choose a location you can easily find later, then click Save. I highly Recommend making a folder to place all of your Anki files.

 

Step 3: Confirm the file downloaded

After the download is complete, check your downloads folder or the folder you selected. You should see the deck file saved as an Anki deck package.

 

Step 4: Open the deck file

Double-click the downloaded deck file. This should open Anki automatically and bring up the import window as it recognizes the Anki specific file type.

 

Step 5: Import the deck into Anki

Once the import window appears, click Import. In most cases, you can leave the default import options as they are.

 

Step 6: Wait for the import to finish

After the import is complete, Anki will show an overview confirming that the notes were added successfully. You can close this window.

 

Step 7: Find the deck in Anki

Return to the main Anki screen. You should now see your CockpitClassroom deck listed and ready to use.

 

Step 8: Open the deck

Click on the deck name to open it.

 

Step 9: Start studying

Once inside the deck, click Study Now to begin reviewing cards.

 

Step 10: Choose how well you knew the card

As you study, Anki will ask you to rate each card using options such as Again, Hard, Good, or Easy. These buttons tell Anki how soon to show that card again.

Again means you did not know it and need to see it soon
Hard means you knew some of it but still need more review
Good means you knew it well enough
Easy means it was very familiar and can be shown less often

This is what allows spaced repetition to work. You MUST answer honestly for ANKI to work as intended.

 

Step 11: Sync your progress

If you want to study across multiple devices, click Sync near the top of Anki. You will be prompted to sign in or create a free Anki account. This keeps your progress saved and available on your other devices. With your account logged in you can easily move back and forth between your phone and computer while saving progress.

 

Step 12: Adjust your daily card limits if needed

If you want to control how many new cards you see each day, click the gear icon next to your deck and open the deck options. From there, you can adjust:

New cards/day
Maximum reviews/day

This is one of the most useful features in Anki because it helps keep your daily study sessions manageable. I would start off by limiting yourself to 20 new cards a day to reduce fatigue initially.
