What is ATOMATO FFLAMES?

Who is talking about tomatoes on fire, and why do we care? At first glance, ATOMATOFFLAMES sounds more like a kitchen disaster than an aviation topic. But it is actually one of the most common ways pilots remember the required instruments and equipment for flight under 14 CFR 91.205. Along with FLAPS and GRABCARD, it helps break down what has to be in the aircraft for VFR day, VFR night, and IFR operations. It sounds ridiculous, but, like many aviation acronyms, that is exactly why it works. The crazier it sounds, the more likely you are to remember it. 

  

What 14 CFR 91.205 Covers 

14 CFR 91.205 lays out the minimum instruments and equipment required for certain types of flight in a powered civil aircraft with a standard U.S. airworthiness certificate. The rule is basically built in layers: 

VFR day 

VFR night 

IFR 

  

VFR night adds to the VFR day list, and IFR adds to the VFR requirements. The regulation specifically says that IFR requires paragraph (b) equipment and, for night IFR, paragraph (c) equipment as well.

  

That is why these acronyms help so much. They make the regulation easier to organize in your head and to remember. But they are just study tools, not a substitute for knowing the actual rule. If an examiner asks what equipment has to be working on the aircraft, you are not going to answer “ATOMATOFFLAMES.” You are going to refer to 14 CFR 91.205 and explain the requirement correctly. 

  

ATOMATOFFLAMES: VFR Day Equipment 

I like using ATOMATOFFLAMES instead of just ATOMATOFLAMES personally because the extra F helps remind me of the flotation gear requirement, which is easy to miss in the regulation. Under 91.205(b), the VFR day list includes the basic flight instruments, engine instruments, fuel indication, landing gear position indication if applicable, anti-collision lighting in certain aircraft, flotation gear in a specific for-hire overwater situation, restraints, and an ELT if required by 91.207

  

Here is the breakdown: 

A – Airspeed Indicator

T – Tachometer for each engine 

O – Oil pressure gauge for each engine using a pressure system 

M – Manifold pressure gauge for each altitude engine 

A – Altimeter

T – Temperature gauge for each liquid-cooled engine 

O – Oil temperature gauge for each air-cooled engine 

 

F – Fuel gauge indicating the quantity in each tank 

F – Flotation gear, if the aircraft is operated for hire over water beyond power-off gliding distance from shore 

L – Landing gear position indicator, if the aircraft has retractable landing gear 

A – Anti-collision light system, for small civil airplanes certificated after March 11, 1996 

M – Magnetic direction indicator 

E – ELT 

S – Safety belts and shoulder harnesses, if installed as required 

  

This list covers the basic equipment for legal VFR day operations. Some of the items are there to help control and navigate the aircraft, while others help monitor engine condition and overall aircraft status. 

  

It is also important to remember that not every item applies to every aircraft or every flight. A fixed-gear airplane would not need a landing gear position indicator. An aircraft without a liquid-cooled engine would not need that temperature gauge. The extra F is the same idea. The flotation gear requirement is real, but it only applies if the aircraft is operated for hire over water and beyond power-off gliding distance from shore, and that same paragraph also requires at least one pyrotechnic signaling device unless the aircraft is operating under Part 121. 

  

FLAPS: VFR Night Equipment 

For VFR night, pilots usually add FLAPS to the VFR day list. The regulation says that for VFR flight at night, the aircraft must have the paragraph (b) equipment plus approved position lights, an approved anti-collision light system, an electric landing light if operated for hire, an adequate source of electrical energy, and spare fuses if the aircraft uses them. 

  

Here is the breakdown: 

F – Fuses, or three spare fuses if the aircraft uses fuses and they are accessible in flight 

L – Landing light, if the aircraft is operated for hire 

A – Anti-collision light system 

P – Position lights 

S – Source of electrical energy 

  

One thing that trips people up sometimes is thinking FLAPS replaces ATOMATOFFLAMES. It does not. For night flight, the aircraft needs the VFR day equipment plus the VFR night equipment. 

  

That makes sense when you think about it. At night, lighting and electrical power matter much more. Position lights help other aircraft see and identify you. Anti-collision lights make you more visible. A source of electrical energy keeps the system alive. And if the flight is for hire, a landing light is required too. Those details come straight from 91.205(c)

  

GRABCARD: IFR Equipment 

For IFR operations, the aircraft must have the required VFR equipment plus the additional instruments and equipment listed in 91.205(d). That is where GRABCARD comes in. The regulation requires suitable communication and navigation equipment, a rate-of-turn indicator with limited exceptions, a slip-skid indicator, a sensitive adjustable altimeter, a clock with hours, minutes, and seconds, a generator or alternator, an attitude indicator, and a directional gyro or equivalent. 

  

Here is the breakdown: 

G – Generator or alternator 

R – Radios for navigation and communication appropriate to the route 

A – Adjustable altimeter 

B – Ball, or slip-skid indicator 

C – Clock displaying hours, minutes, and seconds 

A – Attitude indicator 

R – Rate-of-turn indicator, or turn coordinator 

D – Directional gyro, or heading indicator 

  

This is a really helpful acronym, but it is still just a memory aid. The actual regulation is what controls. The big one people sometimes oversimplify is the R. The rule does not say that every IFR flight requires DME. It says the aircraft must have two-way radio communication and navigation equipment suitable for the route to be flown. So if the route, procedure, or operation calls for DME, then you need it or an approved substitute where allowed. Also, 91.205(e) adds that if VOR navigation equipment is required, a U.S.-registered civil aircraft flying within the 50 states and D.C. at or above FL240 must have approved DME or a suitable RNAV system. 

  

 

The Best Way to Think About 91.205 

The easiest way to keep all of this straight is to think of it in layers: 

VFR day = ATOMATOFFLAMES 

VFR night = ATOMATOFFLAMES + FLAPS 

IFR = applicable VFR equipment + GRABCARD 

  

That is really the whole structure of the rule. These are not three unrelated lists. They build on one another depending on the operation. That's why they are all included within one regulation.

What Each Item Actually Means

Breaking Down ATOMATOFFLAMES 

A – Airspeed Indicator 

The airspeed indicator shows how fast the aircraft is moving through the air. It is required under 91.205(b)(1) and is one of the most basic instruments on the airplane. 

  

T – Tachometer 

The tachometer shows engine RPM. In many airplanes, especially training aircraft, it is one of the easiest ways to monitor engine power. A tachometer is required for each engine under 91.205(b)(4)

  

O – Oil Pressure Gauge 

The oil pressure gauge tells you whether the engine is maintaining proper oil pressure. Low oil pressure can be an early warning sign of serious engine trouble. It is required for each engine using a pressure system under 91.205(b)(5)

  

M – Manifold Pressure Gauge 

The manifold pressure gauge is required for each altitude engine under 91.205(b)(8). In practical terms, this usually matters in aircraft where manifold pressure is part of normal power management. 

 

A – Altimeter

The altimeter shows the aircraft’s altitude by sensing air pressure. It is one of the most basic flight instruments in the airplane and is specifically required for VFR day flight under 91.205(b)(2)

 

T – Temperature Gauge for Each Liquid-Cooled Engine 

If the aircraft has a liquid-cooled engine, it must have a temperature gauge for that engine under 91.205(b)(6). Not every airplane will use this one, but if it applies, it matters. 

  

O – Oil Temperature Gauge for Each Air-Cooled Engine 

Most training airplanes are air-cooled, so this one is familiar to many pilots. It helps show whether the engine is operating in a healthy temperature range and is required under 91.205(b)(7)

  

F – Fuel Gauge 

The fuel gauge must indicate the quantity of fuel in each tank under 91.205(b)(9). That “each tank” part is important. 

  

F – Flotation Gear 

This is the extra F in ATOMATOFFLAMES. Under 91.205(b)(12), if the aircraft is operated for hire over water and beyond the power-off gliding distance from shore, approved flotation gear must be readily available to each occupant. That same paragraph also requires at least one pyrotechnic signaling device unless the aircraft is operating under Part 121. 

  

L – Landing Gear Position Indicator 

If the aircraft has retractable landing gear, it must have a landing gear position indicator under 91.205(b)(10). The pilot needs a reliable way to know whether the gear is up or down. 

  

A – Anti-Collision Light System 

For small civil airplanes certificated after March 11, 1996, 91.205(b)(11) requires an approved aviation red or white anti-collision light system. The regulation also allows continued operation to a place where repairs can be made if one of those lights fails. 

  

M – Magnetic Direction Indicator 

This is basically the magnetic compass. It is required under 91.205(b)(3), and even with newer avionics, it remains on the required list. 

  

E – ELT 

The emergency locator transmitter helps rescuers locate the aircraft after an accident. 91.205(b)(15) requires an ELT if one is required by 91.207

  

S – Safety Belts and Shoulder Harnesses 

91.205(b)(13) requires an approved safety belt or restraint system for each occupant age 2 or older, and 91.205(b)(14) adds shoulder harness requirements for small civil airplanes depending on the date of manufacture. 

  

Breaking Down FLAPS 

F – Fuses 

For VFR night, 91.205(c)(6) requires one spare set of fuses, or three spare fuses of each kind required, accessible to the pilot in flight. This really matters in aircraft that use replaceable fuses instead of circuit breakers. 

  

L – Landing Light 

If the aircraft is operated for hire, 91.205(c)(4) requires one electric landing light. This is not a blanket requirement for every night flight. The key phrase is if the aircraft is operated for hire. 

  

A – Anti-Collision Light System 

For night operations, 91.205(c)(3) requires an approved aviation red or white anti-collision light system on all U.S.-registered civil aircraft, with a repair allowance if a light fails and the flight is continuing to a stop where repairs can be made. 

  

P – Position Lights 

Approved position lights are required for VFR night under 91.205(c)(2). These are the navigation lights that help other pilots identify your aircraft’s orientation at night. 

  

S – Source of Electrical Energy 

91.205(c)(5) requires an adequate source of electrical energy for all installed electrical and radio equipment. In most airplanes, that means the alternator or generator system needs to be working properly. 

  

Breaking Down GRABCARD 

G – Generator or Alternator 

A generator or alternator of adequate capacity is required under 91.205(d)(7). IFR flying depends heavily on instruments and radios, so the electrical system becomes even more important. 

  

R – Radios Appropriate to the Route 

91.205(d)(2) requires two-way radio communication and navigation equipment suitable for the route to be flown. This is where things like VOR, localizer, GPS, or DME can come into the conversation, depending on the operation. 

  

A – Adjustable Altimeter 

91.205(d)(5) requires a sensitive altimeter adjustable for barometric pressure.  

B – Ball 

The “ball” refers to the slip-skid indicator required under 91.205(d)(4). It helps the pilot keep the airplane coordinated, which matters even more when outside references disappear. 

  

C – Clock 

91.205(d)(6) requires a clock displaying hours, minutes, and seconds with a sweep-second pointer or digital presentation.

  

A – Attitude Indicator 

91.205(d)(8) requires a gyroscopic pitch and bank indicator, which most people just call the attitude indicator or artificial horizon. This is one of the core IFR instruments. 

  

R – Rate-of-Turn Indicator 

91.205(d)(3) requires a gyroscopic rate-of-turn indicator, with a few exceptions listed in the regulation for certain aircraft with additional attitude systems. In many training airplanes, this is shown through a turn coordinator. 

  

D – Directional Gyro 

91.205(d)(9) requires a gyroscopic direction indicator, often called a directional gyro or heading indicator. It gives the pilot a more stable heading reference than the magnetic compass alone. 

  

Final Thought 

At the end of the day, acronyms like ATOMATOFFLAMES, FLAPS, and GRABCARD are just tools to help you study and organize the regulation. They make 91.205 easier to remember, but they are not the regulation itself. 

The real goal is to understand what equipment is required, when it is required, and how it applies to the flight you are about to make. That matters a lot more than simply being able to repeat the acronym from memory. 

A pilot may remember ATOMATOFFLAMES, but if an examiner or employer asks what equipment is required for the aircraft, the correct answer is not the acronym. The correct answer is to refer to 14 CFR 91.205 and explain the requirement clearly.
